The War File: Doodlebugs - Hitler's Terror Weapons: The German deployment of the V1 (Vergeltungswaffe), and later the V2 rockets, marked a stunning new development in German military capabilities. These primitive rockets were the first guided missiles in war and the forerunner to today's intercontinental ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. Nicknamed "buzz bombs" for the characteristic sound of their jet engines, they were also referred to as "doodlebugs" after an Australian insect with similar erratic flight patterns.
