Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, the day more Jews attend synagogue than any other. In 2020, because of COVID, in many places this was not be possible. With Melbourne in stage 4 lockdown, ‘Yom Kippur in Lockdown’ looks at how Australia’s largest Jewish community approaches this new reality. This upbeat and surprisingly offbeat time capsule film includes a diverse cast who reflect on the meaning of Yom Kippur and what it’s like experiencing it in lockdown, as we see follow one of the city’s major synagogues pivot to an online service, all set to the sound track of the Yom Kippur prayers.
